Dr. Matthew, keynote speaker for UT Southwestern’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration, emphasized how justice in medicine starts with the individuals in the room, as well as with UT Southwestern as an institution.

The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at UT Southwestern received more than $5 million in research funding in the latest round of grants awarded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

Dr. Trish Perl, a UT Southwestern infectious disease specialist who has worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Ebola issues, recently led its effort to come up with guidelines for the protective gear worn by health care workers treating Ebola patients. Those guidelines have been adopted and published by WHO.

As COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations stabilized in North Texas, UT Southwestern launched a phased reopening of operations that had been suspended due to the outbreak – resuming nonemergency patient procedures, restarting near-shuttered research labs, and finding new ways to train the next generation of health care providers and scientists during a pandemic.

Edith Jones O’Donnell, renowned for her commitment to arts and education and a pivotal figure in helping transform UT Southwestern Medical Center through extraordinary support from the O’Donnell Foundation she founded with husband Peter O’Donnell, Jr., passed away on Nov. 14. She was 94. Together and through the Foundation they established in 1957, Edith and Peter O’Donnell have supported some of the most innovative and impactful programs at the Medical Center.

In March, the clock was ticking for Lee Carver. Tests revealed a mass on her pancreas that could turn into cancer. Pancreatic cancer has the fourth highest mortality rate for both men and women – but expert surgical removal of the mass could stop cancer from ever developing.

The next phase of development on North Campus reached a significant milestone with the completion of exterior framework on a new two-tower building dedicated to the growing research programs of the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and the outpatient care efforts of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. A virtual topping out ceremony was held Nov. 30 to celebrate the occasion.

Dr. Anke Henning, an internationally recognized expert in the latest medical imaging technologies, has joined UT Southwestern as Director of the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC).
