Biomedical innovator Samuel Achilefu, Ph.D., aims to use the power of light to expose and defend against one of the darkest forces of disease that has affected humankind for millions of years – cancer. On Nov. 2, as the final speaker in this year’s President’s Lecture Series, Dr. Achilefu will highlight the history of promising fluorescence imaging technology, discuss its current state, and provide a glimpse of what future applications and opportunities may look like.

UT Southwestern faculty members Philip Greilich, M.D., M.Sc., and Janine Prange-Kiel, Ph.D., have been selected to join the UT System’s Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education in recognition of their outstanding teaching. New members will be inducted at the Academy’s annual Innovations in Health Science Education Conference, scheduled Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Austin.

Two UT Southwestern researchers – one investigating how cancer cells acquire complex genomes and another exploring how photosynthetic animal cells could pave the way for laboratory-based meat products – have been awarded 2022 Haberecht Wildhare-Idea Research Grants.

Dani Mathisen, a third-year UT Southwestern medical student, resolved to find a simple way to talk with kids about the pandemic after hearing this question from a young relative. One night when she couldn’t sleep, she came up with the idea to create an alphabet book to explain the disease and the safety precautions it requires.

Dr. Priyanka Gaur came from a family of engineers on her father’s side and doctors on her mother’s. She headed off to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for college thinking she would explore engineering, but her desire to care for patients led her to medicine instead.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Bridge Program, which was created to increase the number of Black, Latino, and Indigenous students earning doctorates in chemistry, has named UT Southwestern as the first academic medical center in the nation to serve as a Bridge Site.

Turning a plane into a flying ICU requires innovation and creativity, he said. And with talk of the Space Force and future space exploration come exciting questions about anesthesia and surgical capabilities in the space realm, he added. The goal, he said, is “to save the lives of young men and women who sacrifice their lives for our country.”

The Office of Faculty Diversity & Development has established a Departmental Diversity Leaders initiative to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across UT Southwestern’s departments.

In a year when protests over racial justice gripped the nation, UT Southwestern’s Office of Institutional Equity and Access, Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, and Office of Faculty Diversity and Development found ways to bring the campus together for necessary conversations about race. The offices sponsored both collaborative and independent virtual events to keep staff, students, and faculty engaged even as a large part of the UTSW community continued to work and learn remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
