Michael Trinh, the child of Vietnam War refugees, is the first graduate student from UT Southwestern to receive a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and one of 30 recipients nationwide. The fellowship will support his research on how cholesterol is transported inside human cells.

In conjunction with Division of Pediatric Critical Care Chief Jessica Moreland, M.D., and the Moreland lab, Dr. Nichols’ latest study, published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, investigated why some children with Type 1 diabetes develop a complication called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Karolina Stepien, who studies how the brain’s neurotransmitters are released from one neuron to send a signal to another, has been named winner of the 2021 Ida M. Green Award.

James McCulley, M.D., who as Chair grew UT Southwestern’s Department of Ophthalmology into a major comprehensive care and training center while also producing internationally recognized research on topics such as eyelid inflammation and a blindness-causing parasite that can affect contact lens wearers, has been named Professor Emeritus at UTSW.

Daniela Nicastro, Ph.D., Professor of Cell Biology, helped plan and direct UT Southwestern’s Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility, which opened in 2016 with microscopes that can accomplish such feats. At 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, she will give a virtual talk titled “Cryo-Electron Microscopy: Opening a Frosty Window into Cells” as the next speaker in the President’s Lecture Series. Ralph DeBerardinis, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor at UT Southwestern in the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern, is one of three researchers awarded the 2021 Memorial Sloan Kettering Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research.

Delayed by the pandemic, the 15th Annual UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers (SWAT) Reception and Awards ceremony was held earlier this year to honor six UTSW faculty members for teaching excellence in 2020. In addition, The UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers (SWAT) recently welcomed seven outstanding educators to its latest class of inductees. SWAT members are recognized as educators who strive to provide an academic and organizational environment that fosters excellence in teaching at all levels, rewards superb teachers, stimulates innovation in education, and promotes scholarship in education.
