During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Division of Breast Imaging invited the UT Southwestern community to submit decorated bras as part of its 10th annual Bra Decorating Contest. The goal of this annual campaign is to generate awareness, early detection, and screening of breast cancer.

In early February, internationally recognized cardiologist Dr. Thomas Wang became UT Southwestern’s seventh Chair of Internal Medicine. He succeeds Dr. David Johnson, who served in that role for nine years and is staying on as Professor of Internal Medicine.

With COVID-19 infections falling, this year’s graduation ceremony for UT Southwestern Medical School will return to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center after a two-year hiatus and will host U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson as its commencement speaker. The ceremony for this year’s 211 Medical School graduates is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12.

UT Southwestern faculty, employees, and students - including more than 70 veterans –gathered on Veterans Day to celebrate those who have honorably served our country. Inspirational speeches, patriotic songs, and festive food set an uplifting tone for the fifth annual campus event.

Congratulations to the fourth-quarter 2019 recipients of the Diana and Richard C. Strauss Service Excellence Award, honoring employees who exemplify excellent care and service, professionalism, a positive attitude, dedication to teamwork, dependability, enthusiasm, and compassion for patients, guests, and co-workers. The awards are presented quarterly throughout the calendar year. The following employees were selected for their outstanding care and service during the fourth quarter.

Dr. Willis Crocker Maddrey, an accomplished academic and clinical leader at UT Southwestern for three decades, has been named Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine. Recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on liver disease, he has also served with distinction in the Medical Center’s administration as Special Assistant to the President for the past 11 years.

As another Match Day approaches, Dr. Ratner said that students in the Class of 2020 should prepare to shift their thinking from making good grades to providing good care. It was a big adjustment for her.

A physician huddled close to his desktop monitor, waiting for the next patient to appear on the computer screen. As with any new technology, there is a learning curve for both patient and provider that may include a spotty virtual connection or fine-tuning speaker volume or camera settings.

Last November, UT Southwestern began to phase in online scheduling with a first round of about 100 physicians. During its initial three months, more than 800 patients did just that, and 25 percent of them used the service after 5 p.m. or on the weekend.
