Triple Board Elective for Visiting Medical Students

Interested in learning more about the UT Southwestern Triple Board Program?

UT Southwestern will be accepting visiting medical students for the 2024-2025 academic year. We believe it is important to introduce learners to the Triple Board mission as early as possible. In our effort to do just that, we have developed UT Southwestern’s Triple Board Elective. This 4-week elective is tailored specifically to those students who have a keen interest in the Triple Board specialty and are considering it for their careers. The elective allows students to gain experience in the diagnosis and management of complex neuropsychiatric disorders in pediatric populations, practice in multidisciplinary systems of care, incorporate bio-psycho-socio-developmental models into clinical formulations, and conduct treatment planning.

The Triple Board Rotation

Our Triple Board rotation provides medical students with an exposure to the interface of pediatrics, adult psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry. Students will provide child and adolescent psychiatric care at Children's Health Dallas, one of the top pediatric hospitals in the USA and the eighth largest pediatric health care provider in the nation. The Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Service is a multidisciplinary team that evaluates and treats the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive needs of patients receiving care at Children’s Health Dallas. Youth with comorbid medical and psychiatric illnesses are seen in settings including inpatient medical floors, the emergency department, and outpatient clinics. Outpatient pediatrics will be explored in one of our specialty outpatient pediatric clinics. The rotating medical students will also spend time seeing young adult patients in our Transitional Age Youth Clinic at Parkland Health, one of the largest public health hospital systems in the country. As part of the rotation, the student will develop a presentation focused on a Triple Board topic to be shared at the end of the rotation.

We strongly encourage medical students who are considering Triple Board residency programs to contact Dr. Kathie Trello-Rishel (Kathlene.Trello-Rishel@UTSouthwestern.edu) and Dr. Ashley Woolbert (Ashley.Woolbert@UTSouthwestern.edu) to learn more about the medical student 4th-year elective.

To apply, students should visit the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) website for Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™ (VSLO®)--
