Annual Structural Heart Procedures
Our 12-month program is available to graduates of a fellowship program in interventional cardiology and provides one position annually. This advanced fellowship offers expert and dedicated training in structural and valvular heart disease from national leaders in the field. The program includes robust, hands-on training in various procedures including transcatheter aortic valve replacement, transcatheter mitral and tricuspid interventions including edge-to-edge repair, valve replacement, etc. transcatheter pulmonic valve replacements, PFO/ASD/VSD closures, paravalvular leak closures, and left atrial appendage occlusion devices. The training program is primarily based at the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. However, fellows also spend time at the two other teaching hospitals affiliated with UT Southwestern: Parkland Memorial Hospital and the Dallas VA Medical Center. Altogether, more than 400 structural heart procedures are performed at UT Southwestern annually. Interdisciplinary collaboration is strongly supported including weekly valve conference held in conjunction with cardiac surgery, cardiac imaging, anesthesia, adult congenital interventional cardiology and others, and carried over into the catheterization laboratory and operating rooms.
In addition to procedural training, fellows participate in outpatient and inpatient longitudinal evaluation, and follow-up with patients in a multidisciplinary and collaborative fashion. Moreover, they have the opportunity to participate in meaningful quality improvement and research endeavors.
