Medical Student Engagement

The Department of Family and Community Medicine is deeply committed to advancing medical education through diverse and meaningful student engagement opportunities. Our programs emphasize community health, hands-on learning, and leadership development in primary care.

  • Community Action Research Track (CART): A four-year medical school program that integrates community-based participatory research, population medicine, and service-learning to equip students with the skills to improve health outcomes in underserved communities through sustained engagement and collaborative data-driven initiatives.
  • Community Health Fellowship Program (CHFP): Held each summer for 10 weeks for medical students completing their first year, the CHFP fosters collaborative partnerships between medical students and community-based organizations in the Dallas–Fort Worth area to address health disparities through hands-on service, applied research, and structured training.
  • Family Medicine Third-year clerkship: A core clinical rotation that introduces students to comprehensive, patient-centered care across the lifespan.
  • Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG): A student-led organization that promotes awareness of family medicine through events, mentorship, and networking.
  • M.D. with Distinction in Community Health:A scholarly pathway recognizing students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to community health through research and service.
  • Scholarly Activity in the Community Health Track: Structured support for students pursuing academic projects focused on population health and equity.
  • Student-Run Free Clinics: Opportunities for students to provide care in community-based settings while learning about health systems and social determinants. (For more information FCC.srfc@UTSouthwestern.edu)
