As a computer science and technology department set within an academic medical center, one of our departmental initiaves focused on promoting collaborative research and solutions brainstorming for challenges in the world of biomediine. To that end, we hosted hackathons to foster interdisciplinary innovation supported by high-performance compute resources of BioHPC.

Komen-UTSW Breast Cancer Challenge
International scientists and trainees came together to brainstorm innovative solutions to breast cancer’s most pressing, unaddressed challenges with multidisciplinary teams.
2020
Gap Year Projects
During the initial year of the COVID-19 pandemic, 11 teams came together virtually to work on diverse projects throughout the year.

The winning team devised a way to speed up real time patient evaluation of correctly positioned enteric tubes for children with congenital heart disease.

The winning team engineered a machine learning approach to predict neurological injury in pediatric heart-lung bypass (ECMO) patients.
