UT Southwestern’s research labs have restarted experiments with realigned workspaces and schedules as part of the phased reopening of campus following a shutdown earlier this year.

UT Southwestern’s latest class of Endowed Scholars in Medical Science includes researchers focused on proteins implicated in disease, new treatments for neurological disorders, and the human genome. Each Scholar will receive four years of financial support, from 2020-2023, to conduct cutting-edge research as a tenure-track Assistant Professor.

Based on the findings he has made involving flaviviruses and his collaborative work on other viral diseases, Mr. Boys, a member of the Immunology Graduate Program, is this year’s recipient of the Nominata Award, the highest honor bestowed upon an advanced student of the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Ambarish Pandey, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and a Texas Health Resources Clinical Scholar, is using big data to improve diuretic resistance among patients with acute heart failure. Patients hospitalized with heart failure often have volume overload – too much blood in one of the heart chambers for proper function – and are treated with diuretics. Many of these patients do not have an adequate urine output response to the diuretics initially administered, which leads to a prolonged hospital stay as well as persistent symptoms of shortness of breath, he explained.

UT Southwestern stem cell biologist Jun Wu, Ph.D., is one of three researchers recognized as a 2021 New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) – Robertson Stem Cell Investigator. The award will provide $1.5 million over five years to further Dr. Wu’s work to overcome barriers to growing replacement organs for transplant.
