Sometimes “paying it forward” creates a web of good works that leads right back to the giver. That’s the story of Tim Ervin, who in 2014 received a lifesaving double-lung transplant at UT Southwestern.

A nonsurgical procedure that uses innovative valve devices – both developed through multicenter clinical studies, including at UT Southwestern – is giving patients with severe emphysema a new treatment option that allows them to breathe easier.

The latest methods use high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) waves to penetrate the brain and remove unhealthy tissue. It is similar to how children use a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays and burn a scrap of paper – only instead of sunlight, ultrasound is used.

Peggy Joyce Whalley, M.D., a Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern whose pioneering work with high-risk pregnancies saved thousands of expectant mothers and their offspring during a 32-year career at the medical center, died July 6 in Austin. She was 94.
