Scientists at Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern (CRI) have discovered a benefit of vitamin C deficiency: protection from a major parasitic disease.

Carlos L. Arteaga, M.D., Director of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and Associate Dean of Oncology Programs at UT Southwestern Medical Center, has been named as a research scholar for Susan G. Komen®, one of the world’s leading breast cancer organizations.

UT Southwestern biochemist Zhijian “James” Chen, Ph.D., famously identified the cGAS enzyme pathway that alerts the human immune system to disease-causing invaders like viruses. Since then, researchers have found that cGAS signaling is an ancient, conserved defense strategy stretching from bacteria to mammals. A new study from the Chen lab published in Nature reports a novel mechanism bacteria use to enhance the effectiveness of the cGAS-mediated immune response.

UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Health℠ today announced a historic nine-figure grant from the Moody Foundation to support the new $5 billion pediatric campus in Dallas, which broke ground in October 2024. The new hospital will help meet the increasing demand for pediatric health care, research and training. The Moody Foundation’s transformational grant is the largest gift to date for this landmark project.
