DALLAS - Aug. 12, 2014 - Sankalp Gokhale, M.D., has joined the neurocritical care team at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Gokhale whose clinical and research interests focus on stroke recovery trained at Harvard and Duke Universities after attending medical school in India.

During his training in Boston, Dr. Gokhale became interested in mechanisms of stroke and was mentored by Dr. Louis R. Caplan, Senior Neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and a national leader in the treatment and research of stroke.

Dr. Gokhale then held a two-year fellowship at Duke where he continued his research focus in translational neuroscience involving animal models in acute brain injury.

Dr. Gokhale’s research has appeared in more than 35 peer-reviewed journal articles including JAMA Neurology and Stroke. He has also presented at international meetings and serves as a reviewer for prominent journals.

At UT Southwestern, Dr. Gokhale, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neurotherapeutics and Neurological Surgery, will divide his time between research, clinical care and teaching. He will conduct bench research as a member of the Neurorepair Lab.

“I’m interested in translational research with more focus on basic science in traumatic brain injury and stroke, “ said Dr. Gokhale. “My aim is to learn more about neuronal repair.”

With the burden of stroke and trauma increasing as people live longer, Dr. Gokhale hopes to contribute to the knowledge of how the brain recovers after various injuries and use that information to develop new therapeutics.

The recently formed Texas Institute of Brain Injury and Repair at UT Southwestern will allow Dr. Gokhale to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, researchers and biomedical engineers.

“Dr. Goldberg’s leadership and vision for TIBIR has tremendous opportunities for pursuing my research interests,” said Dr. Gokhale.
