Search engine optimization (SEO) is using techniques such as keywords to get a page to rank higher in search engines (e.g., Google, Yahoo). In “SEO Poisoning” cyber criminals use this tactic to make their malicious websites more prominent in searches. This increases the chances that lots of unsuspecting visitors will land on malicious websites, which can be used to distribute malware or steal sensitive information like credit card numbers.

  • Always evaluate your search results before clicking.
  • Make sure you’re not visiting a look-alike site.
  • Only download software from verified legitimate sites.
  • Only enter personal information on confirmed sites.
  • Keep your antivirus and web browser updated.
