Michael Welsh Visits UT Southwestern
Dr. Michael J. Welsh, Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Research Center & Pappajohn Biomedical Institute at the University of Iowa gave the Dennis K. Stone University Lecture in Biomedical Sciences and the Seldin Keynote Lecture at Internal Medicine Grand Rounds on April 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Soon after the gene defective in cystic fibrosis (CFTR) was identified in 1989, Dr. Welsh showed that it encoded a cAMP-regulated chloride channel and that the most common mutation (Δ508) disrupted rather than destroyed protein function. This insight led to the development of small-molecule corrector therapies that restored CFTR function, transforming cystic fibrosis from a fatal disease into a manageable condition. During the visit, a reception was held with selected faculty members, DOCS and young physician-scientists.
