PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency
UT Southwestern Medical Center Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is a newly emerging program currently holding candidate status with ASHP. It is a twelve-month, postgraduate training experience composed of four competency areas: 1) Patient Care; 2) Practice Advancement; 3) Leadership; and 4) Teaching and Education. This program will accept one resident for each academic year.
This program will provide extensive Specialty Pharmacy experience through core rotations covering multiple specialty therapeutic categories. Residents will select three (3) elective rotations to meet their professional goals in addition to the orientation to pharmacy operations and completion of practice-related required learning experiences. After successfully completing this program, the resident should attain the knowledge and skills needed to provide a high level of service and pharmaceutical care throughout their careers as a well-rounded community, specialty or ambulatory care pharmacist.

*Residents may select 2 elective rotations to meet their professional goals.
Program Expectations
- ACPE-Accredited CE Presentation
- Major Project Completion that includes:
- Platform style or poster presentation and
- Written Report
- Completion of a Second (“Minor”) Project
- Business Plan Development for a new or enhanced service

Through Headspace, residents can find mental health coaching, work-life resources, and a variety of wellness content 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Our longitudinal bi-weekly professional development series empowers residents to strengthen their leadership, communication, and networking abilities, helping them evolve into confident, well-rounded pharmacy practitioners. Interactive sessions cover essential topics such as career planning, interviewing strategies, professional branding, and leadership development, equipping residents with the tools they need to thrive in their next career step.
Beyond structured programming, residents benefit from individualized mentorship and personalized one-on-one guidance from program leadership and dedicated advisors throughout the year. This supportive environment fosters professional excellence, meaningful connections, and the confidence to pursue ambitious career goals while building a rewarding and resilient future in pharmacy.

Requirements
- Participate in the ASHP Matching Program
- Graduate or candidate for graduation from an ACPE-accredited PharmD program
- Minimum GPA of 3.1 on a 4.0 scale or "Pass" grade on each class and rotation if from a "Pass/Fail" program
- Licensed or will be eligible for pharmacist licensure in Texas
- Willing to participate in the residency program’s formal interview and candidate evaluation process

Current Resident
Jonathan Chacko, Pharm.D., M.B.A.

Dr. Jonathan Chacko is a PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center. From Plano, Texas, he earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from The University of Texas at Dallas. He went on to earn his Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Business Administration from Texas Tech University Health Science Center. His current clinical interests include ambulatory care and specialty pharmacy. He is a member of Phi Delta Chi, Rho Chi, Phi Lambda Sigma, American Pharmacist Association, and National Community Oncology Dispensing Association. Outside of pharmacy he enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching a new TV show, and finding new places to eat.
