The Department of Surgery would like to congratulate Parsia Vagefi, M.D., on being inducted into the Society of Clinical Surgery (SCS). The SCS is perhaps the most prestigious surgical honor society in the country, with a select membership of clinicians, researchers, and educators who are advancing the practice of surgery.

“It is truly an honor to be inducted into the SCS, and to be able to represent UT Southwestern surgery alongside fellow members Drs. Zeh, Nwariaku, and Chung,” said Dr. Vagefi. “I truly appreciate the dedication of my mentors – both here at UT Southwestern and across the nation – who have made this possible through their unwavering support.”

The SCS was founded in 1903, evolving from a travel club into a group that recognizes exceptional practitioners of surgery. It has a small number of active members (kept constant at 60 people), and consequently it is very hard to become part of the society.

During his time at UT Southwestern, Dr. Vagefi has helped transform our abdominal transplant program, which has more than tripled its number of liver transplantations. He is also a leader in several surgical organizations, and in 2019 was selected as a “Rising Star in Transplantation Surgery” by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.

Dr. Vagefi is one of many faculty members who have made us a destination for outstanding surgical care. His drive, dedication, and leadership are known by those he works with. We are delighted that those qualities are now being recognized by the SCS.
