Education & Training
The education of medical students, residents, and fellows remains one of the top priorities of the Department of Surgery.
Medical Students
All third-year students are required to complete a two-month clerkship in surgery. After successful completion of the third-year clerkship, students may take sub-internships during their fourth year in a variety of surgical specialties. Elective rotations are offered to second and third-year medical students in surgical oncology, ambulatory clinics, and all of the surgical specialties.
Visiting Clerkship in Surgery
This visiting clerkship program gives students the opportunity to engage with the general surgery training program faculty and residents, in order to fully experience the training offered at UT Southwestern.
Surgery Residency Program
The Department of Surgery's residency program is responsible for training more than 90 residents in general surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Surgery Fellowships
The Department provides subspecialty training with fellowships in endocrine, kidney and liver transplant, colon and rectal, breast, surgery critical care, pediatric surgery, minimally invasive/bariatric, and vascular surgery.
