Professor Daniel Scott, M.D., has been appointed as the 2020-2021 president of the Association for Surgical Education (ASE). The mission of the ASE is to lead innovation, scholarship, and professional development in surgical education. It also publishes the American Journal of Surgery

“This is a very special honor in light of our department’s history with this organization,” said Dr. Scott. “Dr. Royce Laycock served as the ASE’s founding president from 1980-1982 and I am humbled to follow in his footsteps.” Dr. Laycock was at UT Southwestern for more than two decades and held a number of leadership positions, including as chief of general surgery and interim chair of the surgery department.

Dr. Scott serves as the director of the Simulation Center at UT Southwestern and as the assistant dean of simulation and student integration. The Simulation Center recently won the Innovation in Education Award from D CEOmagazine and Dallas Innovates, an award that honors companies, entrepreneurs, and other leaders for contributing to the growth of Dallas-Fort Worth. The center was selected from among five finalists.

Dr. Scott joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2005 and teaches advanced gastrointestinal, bariatric, and minimally invasive surgery, as well as all types of hernia repairs. He is significantly involved in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
