Four years ago, the FDA granted Carlos Timaran, M.D., permission to perform operations using an aortic arch aneurysm repair device. As of Friday, April 13, UT Southwestern Medical Center became the third facility in the nation to use the device and the first in the southwest. It will be the only facility in the southwest to offer this minimally invasive option. The device acts as a sleeve, reconnecting the three arterial branches that lead to the brain and heart to the aortic arch and must fit each patient precisely.

Dr. Timaran placed the device in his patient James Isbon on April 13. Just a few days later, Mr. Isbon was able to return home.

“Two days after I was operated on,” said Mr. Isbon, “I was up moving around. Nurses didn’t like it, but by golly, I was up moving around and five days later, I was at home.”
