The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that Emina Huang, M.D., our executive vice-chair of research, has been named as the Doyle L. Sharp, M.D., Distinguished Chair in Surgical Research at UT Southwestern.

This title, and its accompanying endowment, are recognition of Dr. Huang’s outstanding work in cancer research, particularly for colorectal cancer. The endowment is made possible by the estate of Doyle L. Sharp, M.D., a family care physician who graduated from our university in 1956.

“It’s such an honor to be the inaugural holder of this chair,” said Dr. Huang. “Our plan is to use the funds to support growth in riskier but potentially high-impact and collaborative research in the areas of cancer, inflammation, the use of novel models, and high-resolution molecular techniques.”

Dr. Huang came to our department from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. She is an internationally known researcher whose work is supported by the NIH and was recently described in Nature Communications and Nature Biotechnology. She is a graduate of the Stanford University School of Medicine and performed a surgical residency at the Ohio State University.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Huang on receiving this honor. We applaud her dedication and initiative and see the award as more proof of the quality of the researchers in the Department of Surgery.
