One of the values of the Department of Surgery is service, which is exemplified by its staff members who have volunteered to work in vaccination clinics throughout Dallas. This remarkable group includes department administrator Rebecca Napier (who acted as a clinic site director), Lisa Bailey, Patricia Deaton, Kendra Hoskins, Rachael Lefevre, Trishna Naraine, Katrina Ramirez, Christine Sledge, Hamza Syed, Mohammad Syed, Norma Vargas, and Linh Vu.

Many of the volunteers serve in addition to their regular duties, often on Saturdays and Sundays after a busy week. They typically work as patient navigators or in the observation area—greeting patients, showing them where to go, and making them feel welcome and reassured. The volunteers have gotten praise for how well they collaborate with the administrators who register the patients and the nurses who do the vaccinations.

“I could not be more proud of our team members who have given up their free time to help in this enormous effort to benefit the whole community,” said Dr. Herbert Zeh, chair of the Department of Surgery. “They deserve to be recognized and celebrated for their selflessness. Please make sure to thank them individually when you see them!”

The volunteers are part of a UT Southwestern vaccination program that has administered doses to over 100,000 people. Such results have been made possible by the tireless efforts of clinical and operations staff, as well as the volunteers, who have become a regular face at the clinics over the past few weeks.

The Department of Surgery applauds its volunteers and the initiative they have shown in helping others. They are part of a massive undertaking to ease the worry of patients and guide them to care. In short, they provide the human contact and communication that is key to the success of any vaccination plan, especially the historic one that UT Southwestern is carrying out.
