Medical student Matthew Elson is the recipient of the 2018 Hudson Penn Award.

“The Hudson Penn Award is a very prestigious and important award in the Department of Surgery,” Associate Clerkship Director Alan Dackiw, M.D., explains, “recognizing one of our senior medical students whose performance in surgery and attitude and leadership in the care of surgical patients is exemplary. Dr. Elson is a shining example of these criteria and we are delighted he will be continuing his surgical training and care of patients here at UT Southwestern.”

The award is in its 40th year, and is given by the Department of Surgery to a senior medical student whose performance in surgery and attitude toward the care of surgical patients represents the highest standards of UT Southwestern Medical School. The prize, which was established in 1979, is named for the Lee Hudson and Robert Penn families.

Surgery Chair Herbert J. Zeh, III, M.D., and Clerkship Director Rohit Sharma, M.D., presented the award to Mr. Elson at a reception on April 16 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Gendler.
