Dr. Sanjeeva Kalva was one of 47 examiners who recently gathered in Tucson, Arizona, to administer the inaugural exam for Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology (IR/DR) certification. A total of 280 candidates were examined, with 248 passing and receiving initial certification.

The new IR/DR certificate is one of four primary certificates offered by the American Board of Radiology. Those who receive the IR/DR certification have demonstrated competency to practice in diagnostic radiology, as well as the full scope of interventional radiology.

In addition, 2,601 diplomates previously certified in diagnostic radiology with a subspecialty certificate in vascular and interventional radiology (VIR) had their certificates converted to IR/DR certificates. This was 97 percent of the total number of diplomates with a VIR subspecialty; only 78 (3 percent) of these diplomates chose not to have their certificates converted.

Dr. Kalva joined the UT Southwestern faculty as Chief of the Vascular and Interventional Radiology Division in 2013.
