Infectious Diseases & Geographic Medicine
Since 1953, the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center has been dedicated to achieving the highest standards of clinical care, advancing innovative research, and training future leaders in infectious disease.
The Division offers exceptional opportunities in both basic and clinical research, with expanding programs in antimicrobial resistance, novel therapeutics, tuberculosis pathogenesis, genomics and molecular epidemiology, health services, and transplant infectious diseases
Additionally, we staff one of the largest HIV clinical programs in the nation, providing a robust platform for clinical, translational, and basic research in HIV. These strengths make the Division a dynamic and enriching environment for innovation, collaboration, and academic growth.

Patient Care
Our faculty provide expert care for a range of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, resistant infections, and tropical diseases. We offer specialized services at Parkland Hospital, UT Southwestern’s transplant programs, and the VA spinal cord unit. As home to one of the nation’s largest Ryan White HIV clinics and a dedicated HIV inpatient service, we are leaders in HIV care. We also innovate in care delivery through programs like our self-administered Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Program, which adapts to the evolving needs of patients and providers.

Research
The Division fosters a vibrant research environment that supports cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical investigations. Our faculty lead impactful studies in the pathogenesis and treatment of HIV, hepatitis C, and tuberculosis, while also advancing knowledge in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and epidemiology. Additional areas of expertise include correctional health, central nervous system infections, respiratory and musculoskeletal infections. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and access to robust resources, our researchers are shaping the future of infectious disease science.

Faculty
Our faculty are a diverse and accomplished group of clinicians, scientists, and educators dedicated to excellence in infectious diseases. They bring a wealth of experience and passion to patient care, research, and teaching, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. With a shared commitment to innovation and mentorship, our faculty are central to the Division’s mission of advancing the field and training future leaders.

Fellowships
We offer three ACGME-accredited fellowship programs—General Infectious Diseases, HIV Medicine, and Transplant Infectious Diseases—designed to train the next generation of academic leaders. Fellows receive comprehensive clinical training and mentored research opportunities. Our faculty also lead a structured curriculum in Ambulatory and Inpatient Infectious Diseases for internal medicine residents, reinforcing our commitment to education at all levels.
