Pediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship
Why UT Southwestern
Approved by the Texas Medical Board (TMB), our Pediatric Interventional Radiology Fellowship program is centered at Children's Health℠, a private, nonprofit, tertiary-care pediatric hospital and Level I trauma center that is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for UT Southwestern. Fellows gain extensive exposure to all aspects of pediatric interventional radiology, from pre-procedure consultation and clinic to the technical components of the procedures themselves, to inpatient and outpatient follow up care. The case mix ranges from venous access, biopsy and drainage to management of complex vascular anomalies, transplant intervention, interventional oncology and musculoskeletal intervention. All of this with an eye toward the unique needs of children.
Our Mission
We educate fellows in a Texas Medical Board-certified residency program in Pediatric Interventional Radiology. Trainees have a variety of pre-fellowship experience, ranging from small community to larger academic residency programs. Fellows typically have completed a residency or fellowship in Adult Interventional Radiology or a fellowship in Pediatric Radiology.
Program Aims
- Produce Pediatric Interventional Radiologists who will be successful, whether in private practice or an academic setting.
- Impart a core set of concepts and abilities to trainees through a standardized curriculum of lectures, case conferences, multidisciplinary conferences, as well as work experience.
- Introduce the concept of quality in Pediatric Interventional Radiology though involvement in a performance improvement project, quality committee participation, and involvement in the Peer Learning process.
- Participate in a research project and attend a national meeting with a focus in Pediatric Interventional Radiology. Additionally, fellows gain an improved ability to critically evaluate scientific literature in Pediatric Interventional Radiology.

- Program Highlights
Program Highlights
- Fellows rotate through both the Children’s Health Facilities which consists of a state of the art pediatric hospital as well as gain experience in adult interventional radiology by rotating through Parkland Memorial Hospital and William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital.
- Children's Health℠ has a high volume of clinical work with excellent exposure to both simple and complex vascular training including treatment of vascular anomalies, pediatric liver and renal transplant interventions, trauma, lymphatic interventions, abdominal drainage procedures and vascular access.
- Fellows in Pediatric Interventional Radiology attend a multidisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Clinic where they gain knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of vascular anomalies by other specialties.
Beyond the clinical experience
Fellows assist in resident and medical student education, consulting with referring clinicians, and participate in a monthly journal club to review current literature in the major diagnostic radiology journals.

There are minimal call duties as part of this Fellowship program.

Clinical facilities consist of:
- A Level 1 pediatric trauma center
- Two 3T Siemens scanners
- One 1.5T Siemens scanner
- A biplane Siemens angiography
- A second single plane Siemens angiography suite
- Conferences
Conferences
Radiology resident teaching conferences are held twice daily throughout the year and include both didactic lectures and case-based presentations. Fellows are welcome to attend these conferences, as service duties allow. Fellows present conferences in this forum, as well as more informal monthly resident case conferences. A core curriculum in pediatric radiology is offered through weekly didactic lectures by the faculty with fellow involvement.
Pediatric Interventional Radiology conference is monthly. The fellow is also encouraged to attend the adult IR weekly didactic conference.
Radiology Grand Rounds are held monthly with prestigious visiting and local professors, offering the opportunity to meet and learn from leading national authorities on a variety of topics.
Multidisciplinary clinical conferences in combination with pediatrics, pediatric surgery, pathology, urology, and various clinical subspecialties are scheduled throughout the month. Fellows lead the radiology portion of these conferences once or twice per week.

Research Opportunities
Intellectual vibrancy and technological innovation are core values of the Department, which are developed through collaborative efforts involving clinical and research faculty and staff. Fellows have ready access to UT Southwestern's Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center, only five minutes away, and most journals can be accessed online from Children's Medical Center Dallas. Texts are also available for sign-out and review.
Fellows become knowledgeable in basic pediatric interventional radiology research and have the opportunity to attend a major radiology meeting, preferably as a presenter.

Salaries and Benefits
Hospital stipends are set annually and are competitive nationally with those of other teaching programs. The amount, shown in the chart below, depends on the year of residency training.
Low-cost hospitalization and dental insurance is available to contracted house staff, as well as a group life insurance plan.
Medical malpractice insurance is provided for Radiology house staff by the Department through the University of Texas System group plan.
The Fellow's assignments and vacation usage will be determined and/or approved by the Program Director. Fellow will accrue vacation and sick leave on a monthly basis and may utilize such leaves consistent with State law and the Policies and Procedures adopted by UTSW to implement the State law.

Application Process
The program provides one, one-year fellowship positions annually. Information regarding the application process can be found under How to Apply on the main Fellowships page. Below are requirements specific to the Pediatric Interventional Radiology fellowship.
Satisfactory completion of a diagnostic radiology residency program accredited by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
It is recommended that applications be submitted by October 1 (which is 21 months before the fellowship start date)
Our fellowship has agreed to follow the SPR interview date embargo agreement
Three letters of recommendation (one letter must be from current Program Director)
