Since its inception in 1973, UT Southwestern’s Neurology Residency Program has expanded to train adult, pediatric, and combined neuro-psychiatry residents—physicians who now lead in clinical care, education, and research across the country.

“To sustain and elevate this momentum, we must continue providing world-class training opportunities. Help us with our shared mission: to train the next generation of neurologists and physician-scientists who will define the future of neuroscience.”

How You Can Help

The Neurology Education and Research Fund (NERF) was created to strengthen and enrich the educational experience of our neurology residents and fellows. Through the generosity of donors, NERF makes possible the kinds of transformative learning experiences that shape exceptional physicians and researchers.

With leadership from an advisory committee of dedicated alumni who have generously contributed their time and support over many years, the fund directly supports research endeavors, leadership awards, and the alumni reception. Together, these initiatives ensure that UT Southwestern remains a national leader in neurology education—a place where curiosity, compassion, and discovery thrive.

Outcomes

A few examples of resident research supported by NERF:

  • VR-NERF

    Virtual Reality Simulation

Former resident, Dr. Siegfried Hirczy (current UT Southwestern faculty) developed a program using VR (virtual reality) simulation to help patients with Parkinson's disease practice real-world activities.

  • Autonomic Disorders

    Risk of Seizures

Dr. Trung Nguyen analyzed post-ischemic stroke seizure risk and used these findings to identify patients at highest risk of developing post-stroke epilepsy.

  • Cooling Brain Tumors

    Brain Tumor Growth

Dr. Faaiz Enam used NERF funding to purchase reagents and tumor cell lines in his research on brain tumors. His studies have demonstrated the potential effects of cooling to slow the growth of brain tumors.
