Jean Wilson Society

Jean Wilson, M.D., earned international prominence for his investigations of testosterone, including its formation from cholesterol and its metabolism and action. His discoveries led to widely used treatments for prostate disease.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Wilson served as president of the Endocrine Society, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians.

Among his many accomplishments throughout his six-decade career, Dr. Wilson served as the first director of UT Southwestern's Medical Scientist Training Program.

Programs

Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP)

The PSTP at UT Southwestern is a six- to seven-year track designed for residents pursuing careers in academic medicine. It enables fast-tracking to post-residency training, with Internal Medicine board certification by year four and subspecialty certification by year six or seven. The program supports physician-scientists through integrated clinical and research training.

Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP)

CSTP is a newly formed research-focused track within the Internal Medicine Residency, modeled after the PSTP. It supports aspiring clinical researchers through a short-track residency, one year of fellowship, and three years of protected research time. The program prepares trainees for careers in clinical investigation across Internal Medicine disciplines.

M.D. Scientist Training Program (MDSTP)

The M.D. Scientist Training Program (MDSTP) at UT Southwestern offers young physicians specialized post-graduate scientific training. It provides personalized mentorship, opportunities to train with renowned faculty, and 80% salary/fringe support for two years of research. The MDSTP is a campus-wide initiative supporting physician-scientists.

Training Resident Doctors as Innovators in Science (TARDIS)

TARDIS is a two-year research-intensive program for Internal Medicine and other residents at UT Southwestern. It offers structured mentorship and research opportunities during residency, helping trainees explore and refine their scientific interests. The program emphasizes long-term commitment to a career in research and innovation.

University of Texas-Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (UT-StARR) Program

Funded by the NHLBI R38 grant, UT-StARR trains Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residents in research focused on heart, lung, and blood diseases. The program supports diverse physician-investigators through hands-on experience in laboratory, translational, clinical, or population health research, aiming to improve outcomes across the lifespan.
