Transplant Infectious Disease Clinical Track

This Transplant infectious diseases clinical track is designed to provide focused experiences in the management of stem cell and solid organ transplant recipients. Fellows can expand their experiences at Parkland Hospital, William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, and the Southwest Transplant Alliance. At Parkland Hospital, trainees can participate in the decisions made at a safety-net county hospital that performs kidney transplants in the inpatient and outpatient settings. At the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, there are opportunities for additional months in the transplant infectious diseases inpatient consult service and outpatient transplant clinics (kidney, heart, liver, lung, pancreas). The trainee can also seek additional training in stem cell transplantation and solid organ transplantation by rotating with those teams. The fellow could also rotate with the team at the Southwest Transplant Alliance, a local organ procurement organization, to gain insight into donor evaluation and donation. Furthermore, the trainee will be paired with a career and research mentor to develop educational or original research projects.

Objectives

The curriculum aims to promote excellence in the following areas:

  1. To learn how to perform a pre-transplant evaluation
  2. To learn how to evaluate a solid organ transplant donor
  3. To develop strategies to minimize the risk of infectious complications post-transplantation
  4. To understand the process of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies
  5. To understand the process of solid organ transplantation
  6. To develop expertise in treating infectious complications in the immunocompromised host

Resources

Fellows can attend the transplant infectious diseases lecture series, and transplant infectious meetings. If desired, the trainee will be assigned a career and research mentor. Our team can mentor trainees on educational and research projects. The transplant infectious diseases database gathers more than 500 variables per solid organ transplant recipient and can be leveraged to develop original research projects. We aim to develop a track to help you achieve your career goals.
