Internal Medicine Program for Analytic Consultation and Translation (IMPACT)

We are excited to offer statistical analytic support for Departmental investigators, to speed their research into publications and grants. Experienced data analysts and biostatisticians will work with you to launch your research ideas into deliverable products so that they can become fully-fledged funded projects and self-sustaining research programs.

Please read further details of the services provided, and groups the services are designed for.

Activities

IMPACT supports analytic needs for:

  • Early-stage study design (e.g., sample sizing, protocol development, dataset selection)
  • Guidance through creation of Statistical Analysis Plans
  • Data analysis, and drafting/reviewing Methods and Results sections for:
    • Conference abstracts (interim deliverables)
    • Peer-reviewed publications
    • Preliminary analyses for grant applications

IMPACT does not provide:

  • Support for projects not planned for peer-reviewed or grant deliverables
  • Projects with available funding or requiring extensive/multi-year commitments
  • Non-analytic tasks such as: raw data cleaning, data dictionary creation, figure/table design, regulatory management, study coordination, or qualitative research

Groups

Support is prioritized for:

  1. Primary-appointed Internal Medicine faculty in Clinical Scholar and Clinician Educator tracks without alternative funding (eg extramural, intramural research funding; endowment or other fixed use funds)
  2. Assistant Professors, then Associate Professors, then Professors

Given the volume of requests from faculty, we may accommodate requests from trainees working with primary-appointed Internal Medicine faculty, but active faculty involvement will be required and we will be guided by prioritization of faculty as above.

To promote broad access, first-year participation is limited to 7 hours per faculty member, inclusive of statistical, study design, and consultation time. Hours may be extended based on request volume and alignment with IMPACT priorities.

What to Expect

  1. Requesters review IMPACT information to determine eligibility and fit.
  2. Eligible requesters complete an Intake Form, serving as the “front door” to identify project needs, goals, and timeline.
  3. The IMPACT team reviews submissions, clarifies details, and determines eligibility and prioritization.
  4. Projects are assigned to the team, followed by an initial consultation meeting to confirm study goals and deliverables.
  5. Deliverables may include: anticipated analytic support hours, statistical analysis plans, interim conference abstracts, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  6. Projects are closed out after agreed deliverables are met.
