Why UT Southwestern

Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), our one-year Abdominal Radiology Fellowship focuses on every aspect of abdominal imaging using all available modalities. The program is based at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas County's public hospital and a Level 1 trauma center, which provides a wealth of training and exposure to a large, diverse patient population. Additional clinical service includes rotations at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Rogers Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center, and the Clements Imaging Building (PET Center).

    Program Highlights

    Abdominal Images
    • Fellows rotate through Parkland Memorial Hospital (870 beds), Clements University Hospital (460 beds), Rogers Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center, and the Clements Imaging Building (PET Center)
    • A high-volume clinical workload offers immense learning opportunities, with more than 21,000 CT (including CT colonography, CT enterography, and CT angiography), more than 5,000 MR (including newly developed 3T pulse sequence advanced MR imaging), more than 25,000 ultrasound (including advanced vascular ultrasound and elastography), and more than 600 image-guided procedures (over the past year: liver biopsy/drainage 173, thyroid FNA 223, lymph node biopsy 159, renal biopsy 43, paracentesis 59, abdominal abscess drainage in excess of 200) in this section per year
    • Fellowship training is provided by 17 full-time Abdominal Imaging faculty, plus four MR and five Nuclear Medicine faculty
    • Rotations include 12 weeks of Body CT, 12 weeks of Body MR, eight weeks of Body Procedures, eight weeks of ultrasound, four weeks of GI/GU/Fluoroscopy, four weeks of PET, and four weeks of an elective

    Beyond the clinical experience

    Fellows' responsibilities include assisting in resident and medical student education, consulting with referring clinicians, participating in abdominal imaging journal club and quality improvement conferences.

    • Pay is commensurate with PGY level
    • Fellows receive 25 days of PTO annually

    Call Duty

    Fellows take MRI pager call and on-site call at Clements University Hospital under the supervision of Body MRI and Abdominal Imaging faculty. Fellows are not expected to provide final interpretations during call or during their assigned clinical rotations.

    Clinical facilities consist of:

    • Four dual-energy CT scanners, including a Philips IQON spectral CT device
    • One 320-row CT scanner
    • Three 256-row CT scanners
    • Twelve 64-row CT scanners
    • Seven 3T magnets
    • Seven 1.5T magnets
    • Fourteen Philips iu22 (including elastography software) ultrasound units
    • Nineteen EPIQ7 ultrasound units
    • PET/MRI scanner

    Additional research equipment includes:

    • One 7T magnet
  • Conferences

    Conferences

    • Weekly fellow case-conference where fellows present unknown cases with interesting pathology to faculty and discuss the relevant findings and provide an appropriate differential
    • Bimonthly didactic and case-based lectures as part of a dedicated Body MRI fellowship curriculum
    • Monthly MRI physics lectures taught by MR scientists and clinical attending radiologists
    • Monthly journal club where fellows develop critical assessment skills to evaluate methodology, strengths, limitations, and real-world applications of relevant studies
    • Numerous multidisciplinary clinical conferences in combination with medicine, surgery, pathology, and the various clinical subspecialties

    Radiology Grand Rounds are held monthly with prestigious visiting and local professors, offering the opportunity to meet and learn from leading national authorities on a wide variety of topics. Fellows are also welcome to attend resident conferences that pertain to Body MRI, as service duties allow.

  • Research Opportunities

    Research Opportunities

    Fellows participate in a research project in the form of lab research, clinical research, analysis of disease processes, imaging techniques, or procedure management issues. Fellows are guaranteed academic time each week for research activity. Results of scholarly activity will be submitted for publication and/or meeting presentation.

    Fellows also contribute to a quality improvement project.

    Salaries and Benefits

    Hospital stipends are set annually and are competitive nationally with those of other teaching programs. The amount, shown in the chart below, depends on the year of residency training.

    Low-cost hospitalization and dental insurance is available to contracted house staff, as well as a group life insurance plan.

    Medical malpractice insurance is provided for Radiology house staff by the Department through the University of Texas System group plan.

    The Fellow's assignments and vacation usage will be determined and/or approved by the Program Director. Fellows accrue vacation and sick leave on a monthly basis and may utilize such leaves consistent with State law and the Policies and Procedures adopted by UTSW to implement the State law.

    Application Process

    The program provides five one-year fellowship positions annually. Information regarding the application process can be found under How to Apply on the main Fellowships page.We are currently accepting applications for academic year 2025-2026 and will be accepting applications for 2026-2027 in the fall.
