Two months earlier, the novel coronavirus turned my world – the entire world – upside down. For nearly two weeks, I was alone in my bedroom with excruciating headaches, unrelenting body aches, and inescapable fear. There were moments when I wasn’t sure I’d make it.

Last November, UT Southwestern began to phase in online scheduling with a first round of about 100 physicians. During its initial three months, more than 800 patients did just that, and 25 percent of them used the service after 5 p.m. or on the weekend.

When you are running out of a product, wouldn’t it be nice if you could just make more of your own? That’s what two organic chemists at UT Southwestern did when hand sanitizer fell into short supply as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the country. Now the lab-produced sanitizer is helping keep hands germ-free for UT Southwestern caregivers and staff.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, Ms. Hernandez, MBA, B.S.N., RN, delivered her annual message to hundreds of nurses and medical professionals via livestream on May 8. The event took place during National Nurses Week, the American Nurses Association’s weeklong celebration that honors nurses’ contributions to society each year from May 6 to May 12. Her remarks coincided with the World Health Organization’s designation of 2020 as Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and touched on topics like nurse resiliency.

Valerie is just one of many community members and businesses across North Texas that have banded together to put needed supplies in the hands of health care workers. Valerie’s “Masks Matter” campaign raised $7,500, including money contributed online, matching funds from a local business, and a personal donation of more than $1,000 from her savings. With the money, she was able to deliver 10,000 surgical masks and 1,200 FFP2 respirator masks on April 24.

With the number of COVID-19 cases increasing in North Texas, UT Southwestern ramped up efforts to meet the challenge of caring for patients while taking additional steps to protect faculty, students, and staff.

Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. With the help of advanced imaging from UT Southwestern, however, the inner beauty and unseen intricacies of a Senufo helmet mask from the Dallas Museum of Art’s African collection are being appreciated more than ever before.

“I think preparing our workforce to care for the complex needs of older adults, especially related to cognitive care, is critical at this time in history,” said Dr. Camp, who has been named the inaugural holder of the Jake Tobolowsky Professorship in Psychiatry, in Memory of Helen B. Tobolowsky and in Honor of Dr. David M. Tobolowsky.

The brain has always fascinated Ana Ortiz, a neuroscience graduate student in the lab of Dr. Genevieve Konopka. As one of 45 recipients of a Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study, Ms. Ortiz will use the grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to support her research into brain development and how disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may arise.
