UT Southwestern’s 2021 class of Endowed Scholars in Medical Science includes scientists searching for: a way to harness the central nervous system to control pain, to degrade pathological proteins found in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and to better understand the long-running battle between bacteria and the viruses that infect them.

The struggles and sacrifices that Dr. Anthony Han’s parents made as immigrants to the U.S. so that he could have a good education imprinted on him the desire to help others. This led to his interest in becoming a physician, and emergency medicine in particular.

For Dr. Sarah Greenfield, the choice to pursue medicine came from a passion to serve. She is grateful for early work and volunteer experiences – tutoring and mentoring children living in government-assisted housing, serving weekly meals to the homeless, and working at a camp for childhood burn survivors – for igniting the curiosity and empathy that eventually led her to medicine.

We work closely with the department’s Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Program to commission locally synthesized molecular diagnostics and therapeutics. The on-site Cyclotron suite has uniquely positioned the TMIP to aid with molecular imaging projects at any stage across the translational research continuum.

Dr. Kenneth J. Leveno, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern whose leadership helped transform the obstetrical service at Parkland Memorial Hospital into a preeminent model of clinical care and educational opportunity, died May 2. He was 78.

When her dad suffered a stroke, Dr. Leah Carter Smith witnessed the compassionate care he received in the ICU. That experience convinced Dr. Smith to pursue medicine and become an advocate for patients and families through all stages of their lives as a family medicine physician.

The selfless dedication of medical professionals who treated his grandmother for a heart attack following a hurricane years ago always stuck in Dr. James Tran’s mind. Even with many roads still flooded at the time, they came to her rescue, inspiring Dr. Tran to eventually follow in their footsteps.
