Dr. David A. Minna, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Rheumatic Diseases Division at UT Southwestern and a pioneer in incorporating musculoskeletal ultrasound into the specialty’s clinical practice, passed away Nov. 5 after an extended battle with cancer. He was 73.

Dr. Richard Medford’s first experience with clinical informatics came as an undergraduate in Canada when he hustled to build a database from paper records of patients who had been screened for SARS during a 2003 outbreak of the virus.

Ahneesh Mohanty’s first experience with UT Southwestern came as a young patient hospitalized for Kawasaki disease at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, where he received follow-up care for several years. “Because of this experience, I innately knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue medicine,” he said.

The Prevalence Study has since expanded to allow anyone living in Dallas or Tarrant counties to participate via a brief survey online or by phone. Based on responses to the survey questions, some individuals may be selected for further testing to determine if they have COVID-19 or have previously been infected.

Dr. Stephen Spurgin, a UT Southwestern pediatric cardiology fellow, has been accepted into the Pediatric Scientist Development Program (PSDP), a highly competitive national program that helps pediatric doctors in training become skilled physician-scientists. A $200,000 grant from this program, sponsored by The Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs and funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, will support Dr. Spurgin’s pediatric heart health research.

The theme for this year’s event was teamwork, with an address from keynote speaker Dr. Eduardo Salas, Chair of Rice University’s Department of Psychological Sciences.

For a second consecutive year, Match Day for UT Southwestern medical students and many others nationwide became a virtual event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

First quarter recipients were celebrated during a May 17 virtual event hosted by Jonathan Efron, M.D., Executive Vice President for Health System Affairs.

Dr. Bruce Mickey, a UT Southwestern neurosurgeon praised by many of his patients for his personal touch as well as his precise hands, has been named Professor Emeritus of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Daniel Scott, Assistant Dean of Simulation and Student Integration at UT Southwestern, and Krystle Campbell, Director of Simulation Center Operations, will share their experiences and perspectives with the campus community in an upcoming President’s Lecture Series. Titled “Imitating Reality: Using Simulation to Improve Patient Care,” the virtual event will be presented at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 6.
