Scientists at the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern (CRI) are using a new approach to pinpoint the causes of rare genetic diseases in children and identify treatment options faster than with traditional methods. The new approach combines DNA sequencing and a chemical analysis called metabolomics to identify mutant genes that cause defective metabolic pathways in patients.

A new molecular mechanism discovered by UT Southwestern researchers indicates that drugs currently used to treat less than 10 percent of breast cancer patients could have broader effectiveness in treating all cancers where the drugs are used, including ovarian and prostate cancers. The new study, published in Molecular Cell, also revealed a potential biomarker indicating when these drugs, called PARP inhibitors, can be unleashed in the fight against cancer.

The renowned scientific culture at UT Southwestern was a major attraction for Dr. William T. Dauer, an acclaimed physician-investigator in dystonia and Parkinson’s disease who was recruited in a national search to become the inaugural Director of the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute.

Manipulating dose, timing of therapies reduces relapse in cancer mouse models
