October 24 marks the100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Donald Seldin. Having recently published a biography about the iconic Dallas physician – Donald Seldin: The Maestro of Medicine – I confess that he continues to live in my mind more than two years after he passed away. For those who were privileged to study under him or know him personally, Dr. Seldin was a towering figure. It is not an exaggeration to assert that he transformed an institution, nurtured generations of physicians, and enriched his community almost without parallel in the history of modern medicine.

For several years, Dr. Scott Smith, Associate Dean of Research in the UT Southwestern School of Health Professions, worked closely with the Dean, Dr. Jon Williamson, to secure approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the state’s first Ph.D. program in Applied Clinical Research. Approval came in April 2019, and the program welcomed its first cohort of Ph.D. students that fall. Providing rigorous clinical research training for allied health professionals aspiring to pursue careers as independent clinician investigators, the program is an essential part of the plan to stimulate growth in the School of Health Professions’ research enterprise.

The Foundation’s recent $25 million gift to support neuroscience translational research will help the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute move science more quickly from the research bench to the patient’s bedside and transform discoveries into improved and innovative drugs, devices, and treatments.
