John Andersen, M.D., a pioneer and guiding force in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at UT Southwestern for over four decades, recently retired and has been appointed Professor Emeritus.

The Biochemistry Department’s Post-Baccalaureate Program gives students from underrepresented minority groups support to pursue a career in science, said Uttam Tambar, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry, Director of Diversity for Biochemistry, and Chair of the Organic Chemistry Ph.D. Program in the UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The goal is to increase diversity among students and faculty involved in biochemistry and chemistry research.

Dr. Ambarish Pandey, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and a Texas Health Resources Clinical Scholar, is using big data to improve diuretic resistance among patients with acute heart failure. Patients hospitalized with heart failure often have volume overload – too much blood in one of the heart chambers for proper function – and are treated with diuretics. Many of these patients do not have an adequate urine output response to the diuretics initially administered, which leads to a prolonged hospital stay as well as persistent symptoms of shortness of breath, he explained.

Dr. Shembel, who joined UTSW in 2020, is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and has a background in vocal performance. Her work focuses on the effects of increased neuromuscular demands on the vocal subsystems.
