Don't forget to save energy and shut down for the holidays

During the holidays, many employees may be taking extended time off work. This is an opportunity for everyone to practice some basic sustainability skills.

In your office and labs:

  • Turn off all lights, including task lighting (under counter lights, lamps) to save energy.
  • Close blinds and windows to insulate the space. Texas weather could turn hot or cold over the break.
  • Unplug appliances like coffee makers, water coolers, instant hot equipment, and microwaves to reduce vampire energy loads.
  • For computers, turn off peripherals such as printers and monitors. Shut down computers if you can; they could use a break, too.

Facilities Management will be on site if there are emergencies, but you can sign up for building notifications so you know if there is an emergency in your building. Power outages, HVAC failures, and water leaks are all reported to building staff who have signed up for Building Interruption Alerts.
