Scholarly Activity
Course Description
Scholarly Activity in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) offers medical students the opportunity to gain both formal training and hands-on experience in QI methodology. Students can tailor their learning through individualized coursework aligned with their interests and career goals. The program provides the structure and mentorship needed for students to participate in, design, and lead QI and patient safety projects.
Upon completing the QIPS scholarly activity, students will be able to:
-
Identify the key elements of an effective aim statement
-
Distinguish among process, outcome, and balancing measures
-
Develop and test small-scale changes using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle
-
Apply QI tools appropriately and effectively
The curriculum integrates online, module-based learning with experiential, project-driven work. Students receive guidance and project support from advisers within the Office of Quality, Safety, and Outcomes Education, ensuring a meaningful and practical learning experience.
Students will also have the opportunity to work directly with our QI experts, Annette Irving and Eleanor Phelps, who provide guidance, mentorship, and support throughout the program.
