M.D. Scientist Training Program – FAQs
If one is currently in a residency training program, when is the optimum time to apply for a position in the MDSTP?
The annual deadline is in the Spring (April) and the review process is in May. All applications should be made after joining UTSW for clinical training (residency or fellowship, as applicable for your specialty) and before joining a lab or research group.
Must I formally enroll in graduate school during the research component of my fellowship?
No; however, you may audit selected graduate school courses.
Do I need to be nominated for the MDSTP?
Yes. The application process requires a nominating letter from the Chair for the UT Southwestern Medical Center department in which you will train, as well as a support letter from the residency or fellowship program director.
Is prior research experience a prerequisite for admission?
Prior research experience is desirable but not required.
Can the research time be broken up into three six-month blocks?
No.
Can fellows moonlight during the research years of their training?
Moonlighting is discouraged. Exceptions will be decided by the fellowship director and the scientific mentor.
How much clinical work is allowed during the period of research training?
A small amount of clinical work is allowed during the research years. The precise amount varies by subspecialty but the program encourages less than 20% clinical effort.
Will I continue to have health care coverage and other benefits?
Yes. All available fringe benefits will be continued during training under the MDSTP.
