Dr. Danielle Callaway Named Newest DOCS Awardee from the Department of Pediatrics

JUNE 16, 2026 - The DOCS Selection Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Danielle Callaway, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, is the newest DOCS awardee, effective June 2026. Dr. Callaway joins 10 current DOCS and is the only recipient from the Department of Pediatrics, further expanding the program’s reach and impact across UT Southwestern.

Dr. Callaway earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Dallas and her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed her pediatrics residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where she participated in the Pediatrics Scientist Training Program. She then became a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Research Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia before joining UT Southwestern as an Assistant Professor in 2024.

Dr. Callaway’s research focuses on how mechanical forces influence alveolar type 1 cells during prenatal and postnatal lung development. Her laboratory investigates how these forces drive changes in gene transcription, extracellular matrix remodeling, and intercellular communication, advancing our understanding of lung development and how disruption of these pathways contribute to bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a common disorder of prematurity.
