Cultivating Knowledge to Impact Positive Change

The CDRC is committed to providing learning opportunities for clinicians, students, and anyone in our community interested in learning more about mental health and resilience. Through many of our programs, we are training the next generation of mental health care providers and increasing the quality of treatments to patients in North Texas.

Professional Education

Professional education is a large part of our vision of a future free from the burden of depression, and our efforts at UT Southwestern to build a growing number of clinical and research professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify and treat mood disorders.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) 

  • The CDRC holds meetings for providers from all different disciplines to come together and learn about topics ranging from best treatment practices to new antidepressant medications.

Community Programming 

  • Our team provides educational presentations to help raise awareness about the symptoms of depression, available treatments, and specific topics such as risk factors and warning signs for depression and suicide and recognizing depression in youth.

Measurement-Based Care (MBC) and Collaborative Care Model (CCoM) Training 

  • A series of learning modules based on the success of our VitalSign6 Initiative are available through our new CDRC Training Academy.

Continuing Education Focused on Youth

Community Programming 

  • We provide educational presentations to help raise awareness about the symptoms of depression, available treatments, and specific topics such as risk factors and warning signs for depression and suicide and recognizing depression in youth.

Wellness Ambassador Training

  • Training for school personnel to serve as Wellness Ambassadors to provide initial support to struggling students, and work with students and their parents to identify important resources (whether it be physical or emotional) to get the student back on track.

  • Part of the training will be to distinguish the level of intervention warranted, which could range from basic coping strategies to outpatient treatment or even hospitalization.

     Trainings will include:

    • Screening tools and how to utilize them to know which students to direct support to
    • Evaluation skills to identify needs
    • Intervention strategies, including but not limited to: coping skills, mindfulness, problem-solving, identifying barriers to treatment, linking to resources, care coordination, and follow-up to ensure needs were met

YAM Certification for Health-Related Institution Personnel

  • Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) is a universal mental health literacy and resilience program that is currently being implemented in many schools in North Texas and that began state-wide implementation in the Fall of 2022 as part of our CDRC Training Academy.

Training Opportunities

Clinical Research Experiences in Depression (CRED) 

  • An internship/volunteer program committed to educating students to be tomorrow’s leaders in Clinical and Translational Depression Research and Mental Health.
  • This internship, designed for medical and undergraduate students, provides hands-on experience in different aspects of clinical and translational research.
  • This 8-week program will run June 3 to July 26, 2024.
  • If applicable, this program supports course credit or placement credit.
  • Application deadline: February 28, 2024. Submit unofficial transcript, CV, and letter of interest to Amber Barker (amber.barker@utsouthwestern.edu). Phone interviews will be conducted in March 2024.

Translational Research Activities in Neuropsychiatry (TRAIN)

  • Aresearch track residency program funded by the National Institutes of Health (R25MH101078; MH Trivedi, Principal Investigator).
  • TRAIN participants receive protected time to complete clinical translational didactics and research activities.
