Message from the Chief Residents

Welcome! Our Family Medicine Residency Program at UT Southwestern is unique in that we have the opportunity to care for populations in both county and community/private practice settings. We have the benefits of being at a major academic center where we can learn from numerous specialists, as well as multiple community partners where we can learn from various primary care physicians. This allows our residents to gain a breadth of learning experiences and truly tailor your residency education to your interests.

With our location being in a major metroplex and having access to UT Southwestern's community resources, we have the advantage of training in multiple hospital systems and caring for diverse patient populations. One main site is Parkland Health and Hospital System, which is the county hospital for Dallas County. We have the opportunity to care for many underserved and uninsured patients in outpatient and inpatient settings and gain the perspective of providing care in low-resource settings. On the private side, our main site is Texas Health Resources, who partners with the UT Southwestern system. It is at this site that we become familiar with billing and private practice management. In addition to these two main sites, we also rotate at other UT Southwestern specialty and community clinics, as well as Children's Medical Center and Clements University Hospital.

Apart from our core rotations and limitless elective rotation options, our residents have the option to further personalize their residency experience with special tracks. These include our HEART (Health Equity, Advocacy, Research Training), integrative medicine, sports medicine, HIV, and academic medicine tracks. Each track is overseen by our own family medicine faculty who are very passionate about these interest areas. There is also the option to create a track if a resident has an interest area outside of these current ones.

The one aspect that we value most about our program is the people, both residents and faculty. The diversity of our department reflects itself in the multitude of ways that we care for our diverse patient population. It is a privilege to learn from each other, whether that is about medicine or about life! Our faculty are always eager to guide us along our residency journey and ensure we are prepared for our desired careers.

As chief residents, we aim to prioritize a quality education along with resident wellness. Our program has two retreats a year, a resident-run wellness committee that organizes multiple events with each academic year, integrated behavioral health team that completes regular check-ins, lactation rooms at all clinical sites, elective accommodations for residents who are new parents, and we have access to the UT Southwestern Wellness Center which provides free therapy sessions. Your life outside of medicine is just as important as your life within it. If you value similar qualities in your ideal family medicine residency program, we encourage you to consider applying and joining our UT Southwestern family. Thank you for your interest in our program and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
