Surgery Resident Research Opportunities

UT Southwestern Medical Center is an exceptional destination for surgical residents passionate about research. Recognized in the Nature Index 2025 Annual Tables, as one of the nation's top healthcare institutions for high-quality scientific publications, we provide an ideal environment for academic growth.

Although the General Surgery residency follows a traditional five-year clinical structure, residents at UT Southwestern have the opportunity to pursue dedicated research fellowships during their training. After their second or third clinical year, they may choose a one-, two-, or even three-year professional development sabbatical to delve into surgical academia, strengthen their credentials, and refine their research and academic interests.

Past residents have engaged in diverse research environments, including basic/translational science, clinical research, surgical education, and clinical informatics, with some pursuing advanced degrees. Because research should align with each resident’s professional goals, the Department of Surgery supports a wide range of research focus areas—provided there are clear objectives and appropriate mentorship.

Typically, four to five residents per year opt for additional research training, though the department does not enforce a strict minimum or maximum. While residents are encouraged to seek independent grant funding, additional support from the department and principal investigators is available when needed. Some residents also choose to pursue external research opportunities through the National Institutes of Health or National Clinician Scholars Program.

Research years are entirely optional, and no resident is required to participate, but for those interested, UT Southwestern offers unparalleled resources and mentorship to foster academic excellence.
