Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers a one-year ACGME-accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship that provides comprehensive training in primary care sports medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasound, procedural skills, concussion management, multidisciplinary sports care, and athletic event coverage through diverse clinical and community-based experiences.
Newly launched in 2026, our program is well-equipped to educate a fellow with six PM&R sports medicine faculty, three family medicine sports faculty, as well as multiple orthopedic sports surgeons in our core faculty. The fellow will experience multiple clinical settings and high procedural volume, including ultrasound guided interventions and orthobiologics. Additionally, the fellow will get to spend time in a variety of sports medicine coverage settings, from high school to professional. There is also a robust adaptive sports experience and plenty of academic resources in the medical center for scholarly activity.
We are taking applications now and plan to offer virtual interviews for October.
Curriculum
The fellow will receive a comprehensive education and clinical knowledge in sports medicine and advanced training in procedures related to the practice of sports medicine through a variety of didactic and clinical experiences. Interventions include diagnostic and interventional ultrasound (joint, peritendinous, and perineural injections), orthobiologics, shockwave, and Tenex. Those who completed a PM&R residency have the option to continue training in fluoroscopic-guided spine injections and electrodiagnosis. The fellow will also gain exposure to procedures such as suturing, casting/splinting, and joint reduction as the need arises during training room clinics and event coverage.
Eligibility Requirements
Fellows must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited program, or an RCPSC-accredited program located in Canada in one of the following: emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine, pediatrics, and/or physical medicine and rehabilitation.
The Sports Medicine fellowship at UT Southwestern participates in the NRMP Fellowship Match and candidates must apply through ERAS. Information regarding the application process can be found here.
