Ortho Start Up Program

Start Up: Spine | Tumor | Arthroscopy/Sports | Reconstruction | Trauma | Upper Extremity | Pediatrics

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has created the Ortho Start Up Program. This is a 10-month program designed to provide medical students and junior residents with an introduction to orthopaedic surgery, research opportunities, and mentorship.

Start Up Goals

Allow students to attend clinical shadowing, research meetings, and monthly team meetings.

Provide an application process that pairs students by interest and mentorship.

Create a comprehensive repository of orthopaedic surgery research projects.

Topics Covered

  1. How to read a journal article
  2. Performing a literature review
  3. Asking a meaningful question – hypothesis
  4. Study design
  5. Clean data – tips and tricks for data collection
  6. Basic stat terminology and training
  7. Redcap tutorial or slicerdicer tutorial
  8. How to give an excellent scientific presentation (posters v. podiums)
  9. Scientific writing – how to be concise, clear, and publish
  10. Systematic reviews – partnership with library services

Ortho Boot Camp

One week curriculum in May facilitates excellent performance on clerkships and SubI’s.
