Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship (Two-year) - Program 2414824001
This ACGME-accredited fellowship is a 24-month program that provides comprehensive training in oculofacial plastic surgery, with hands-on experience in orbital, eyelid, lacrimal, and cosmetic procedures. One fellowship position is offered each year, ensuring both a junior and senior fellow are in training at all times.
Fellows provide oculoplastic care throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area at UT Southwestern William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (ranked #1 in DFW 11 years running), Parkland Memorial Hospital (Dallas's county hospital), and Children's Medical Center Dallas (one of the country's best pediatric hospitals). These training sites offer high surgical volume and broad exposure to pathology across diverse patient populations. Fellows participate as both primary and assisting surgeons and gain experience caring for patients of all ages, demographic groups, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Primary clinical rotations are with oculoplastics faculty Phillip Tenzel, M.D. (Director), and Co-Directors Kamel Itani, M.D., and Pooja Parikh, M.D. Additional rotations include ENT/rhinology, plastic surgery, dermatology and Mohs surgery, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and craniofacial surgery. The didactic curriculum includes an annual onsite cadaver wet lab, M&M conferences, grand rounds, tumor boards, and attendance at regional and national meetings, providing fellows with broad and in-depth clinical and surgical training.
The department supports fellows' research and professional development and provides standard policies for research, time off, vacation, and educational expenses. The junior-senior fellow structure allows for a shared, alternating call schedule. Fellows also benefit from formal and informal teaching opportunities through the department's ophthalmology residency program, the largest in the country.
Projected fellow case numbers based on sample schedules and past attending surgical case load:
- 1,250 procedures annually, including approximately 800 as primary surgeon (cosmetic cases included)
- 85% functional and 15% cosmetic
- 10% lacrimal, 10% orbit

Prerequisites
Candidates must have successfully completed ACGME accredited ophthalmology residency training and be eligible to obtain a full Texas medical license. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required.
