Chief Residents for 2027-2028
The Chief Residents for 2027-2028 have been selected, representing both the resident body as well as a range of skill sets.
"This is a group who will truly advocate for, and support, the needs of our residents," said Salahuddin Kazi, M.D., a Professor in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases, Vice Chair of Education, and Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency. "They will be well-being warriors, innovators, and true representatives of our program."
"I'm confident this team will elevate the resident experience in meaningful ways," Dr. Kazi added. "Their leadership, insight, and dedication will strengthen our program and continue the tradition of excellence our residents deserve."

Raj Dalal, M.D.
Second-Year Resident
Hometown: Chicago, Illinois
Raj Dalal was born in Dallas but raised in Chicago and Houston. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and cell biology from Rice University in Houston and his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He couples‑matched to UT Southwestern with his partner, an Ophthalmology resident, and joined the Health Systems Pathway to deepen his interest in care delivery.
He plans to pursue a gastroenterology fellowship following his service as Chief Resident.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Dalal enjoys watching films produced and directed by Christopher Nolan, playing and watching basketball, running the Katy Trail, and joining co‑residents for sand volleyball.

George Doumat, M.D.
Second-Year Resident
Hometown: Aleppo, Syria
George Doumat was born and raised in Aleppo, Syria, before moving to Lebanon. He completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the American University of Beirut, where he met his wife, Darine, also an Internal Medicine resident, and later completed a research fellowship in epidemiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
He intends to pursue a career in academic pulmonary and critical care medicine, with interests in clinical and translational research and medical education.
Beyond work, Dr. Doumat enjoys watching professional sports, running, cooking, and planning travel with his wife.

Gabriella Gerlach, M.D.
Second-Year Resident
Hometown: Hillsborough, North Carolina
Gabriella Gerlach grew up in North Carolina, earning her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by medical school at Florida International University in Miami.
Her interests in medical education and patient advocacy led her to join the MedEd track, and she plans to pursue a fellowship in cardiology after residency.
When not in the hospital, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, walking the Katy Trail, and discovering prestige television series long after their original release.

Adam Saleh, M.D., M.Eng.
Second-Year Resident
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Adam Saleh was born in Austin and raised in Houston. He earned a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin before completing the EnMed program, where he received his medical degree alongside a master's degree in engineering.
Passionate about innovation in medicine, he aims to pursue gastroenterology with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease.
In his free time, Dr. Saleh enjoys staying active through climbing, weightlifting and running, and spending time with his wife.

Esmeralda Segura, M.D.
Second-Year Resident
Hometown: Kissimmee, Florida
Esmeralda Segura was born in California, raised in Florida, and is of Colombian and Guatemalan heritage. She earned her undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences with a minor in public health from the University of South Florida and later served as co‑director of the Department of Community Service at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Her experiences strengthened her commitment to health equity, advocacy, and mentoring, and she plans to pursue a career in pulmonary and critical care medicine through the medical education track.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Segura enjoys the theatre, playing pickleball and volleyball, and traveling with family and friends.

Alexa Wilden, M.D.
Second-Year Resident
Hometown: Clinton, Iowa
Alexa Wilden was born in Davenport, Iowa, and raised in Gardner, Kansas. She earned her bachelor's degree in microbiology from Kansas State University before moving to Dallas for medical school at UT Southwestern.
Her professional interests include medical education, hospital medicine, and primary care.
In her spare time, Dr. Wilden enjoys traveling, scrapbooking, volunteering at the Agape Free Clinic, and spending time with her husband and their dog. A fun fact: her family has rescued 10 dogs.
