Ebrahim Barkoudah Appointed Chief of Hospital Medicine

Dr. Ebrahim Barkoudah has been selected as inaugural Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine, effective January 19, 2026.

"Dr. Barkoudah's recruitment marks a significant milestone in the Department's commitment to advancing hospital medicine," says Ezra Burstein, M.D., Ph.D., Interim Chair of Internal Medicine. "As Chief, he will lead the largest division in the Department and will serve as a key member of the Department's senior leadership team."

Dr. Barkoudah currently serves as System Chief of Hospital Medicine and Academic Division Chief of Hospital Medicine at Baystate Health, where he also holds roles as Regional Chief Medical Officer and Regional Chief Quality Officer. At UT Southwestern, he will shape a nationally recognized program in hospital medicine, with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, education, and research.

Dr. Barkoudah earned his medical degree from Damascus University, completing residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He then obtained advanced training through a fellowship in clinical excellence at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he also earned a master’s degree in public health. He later received an Executive MBA from the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School.

As Division Chief, Dr. Barkoudah will oversee hospital medicine services across UT Southwestern University Hospitals, Parkland Hospital, and THR Frisco, and any hospitalist faculty based at the VA North Texas Health Care System. He will also be responsible for directing the division’s research and educational missions.

Throughout his career, Dr. Barkoudah has demonstrated a deep commitment to improving hospital care delivery and advancing health system performance. He has held numerous leadership roles at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, including Associate Medical Director of the Hospital Medicine Unit and Medical Director of the Nocturnist Service. He has also served as a clinical champion for system-wide initiatives such as Epic implementation and ICD-10 transition.

Dr. Barkoudah is a prolific scholar and educator, with more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and extensive involvement in national and international clinical trials. He has served on editorial boards for multiple journals, including the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management, and has been a frequent invited speaker at national conferences hosted by the Society of Hospital Medicine, American College of Physicians, and Becker’s Healthcare. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Society of Hospital Medicine, and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
