Former Resident Receives Young Author Achievement Award

Dr. Rohit Nathani

Rohit Nathani, M.D., a 2025 graduate of the Internal Medicine Residency, received an Honorable Mention for the William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award in recognition of his manuscript, “Relation Between the Incidence of In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest and Survival in Older Patients,” published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in July 2025. His study found that hospital rates of in-hospital cardiac arrest and survival are only modestly related, indicating that IHCA incidence serves as an independent quality metric, and showed that higher nurse staffing ratios were the only modifiable factor linked to both fewer arrests and better survival.

The Parmley Award honors early-career investigators whose work demonstrates exceptional scientific rigor, originality, and clinical relevance. An Honorable Mention signifies the high quality of Dr. Nathani’s research and underscores his emerging leadership in cardiovascular medicine.

“We commend Dr. Nathani for this achievement and are grateful for the strong research and mentorship environment at your institution that supports high-caliber scholarship and advances cardiovascular science,” said Harlan M. Krumholz, M.D., Editor-in-Chief.

“Dr. Nathani exemplifies the curiosity, discipline, and commitment to patient-centered research that we strive to cultivate in our trainees,” said Salahuddin “Dino” Kazi, M.D., a Professor in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases, Vice Chair of Education, and Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency. “His work not only advances our understanding of in-hospital cardiac arrest but also reflects the values of rigorous inquiry and continuous improvement that define our residency program.”

Dr. Nathani is currently receiving advanced training through a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Iowa Hospitals. ■
