UT Southwestern Medical Center is certified as a Comprehensive Cardiac Center (CCC), having earned the Gold Seal of Approval® from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association (AHA). As one of just 24 hospitals in the nation to receive the CCC designation, UT Southwestern has met or exceeded rigorous standards for excellence across the continuum of heart and vascular care.

U.S. News 2024-25 Nationally Ranked in Cardiology and Vascular

UT Southwestern Medical Center is ranked #21 (tied) in the nation for cardiology, heart, and vascular surgery, according to U.S. News & World Report for 2024-25.

The Division of Cardiology, directed by James de Lemos, M.D., includes a large group of nationally recognized faculty members with expertise in virtually all aspects of modern cardiovascular care and advanced research. The team includes specialists in the management of all forms of heart disease, predisposing risk factors, and complications.

Our cardiologists collaborate with physicians and researchers from other divisions and departments as part of multidisciplinary teams to evaluate patients and perform complex procedures. This team approach to the treatment of cardiovascular disease promotes excellence in patient care in an environment ripe with innovation and research.

Research

Our Division has made many groundbreaking contributions to cardiac care, including Nobel Prize-winning work in cholesterol metabolism, which led to the development of statin drugs. More recently, the landmark Dallas Heart Study is transforming cardiovascular risk factor identification and management for physicians and leading to better care for patients.

They provide cardiology services at three hospital systems with distinct populations and patterns of disease that contribute robust clinical material for research and education.

Fellowship Programs

Training & Education

Our fellowship programs offer tracks in combined clinical and research training in cardiology, postdoctoral fellowships in basic research, and advanced training in specialized clinical disciplines. The Division has a dedicated T32 training grant for cardiovascular research, and fellows also benefit from a large number of other institutional grant opportunities.
